As Boston, like the rest of the world, returns to life in a post-pandemic world, it is set to come out with an exciting plethora of activities to celebrate the arrival of the winter season and the bevy of holidays that come with it.
Below are some of the things to do in Boston this holiday season.
LIGHT UP THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Boston ushers in the holidays with Christmas tree-lighting ceremonies at iconic locations such as Macy’s in Downtown, the USS Constitution, Boston Seaport, Christopher Columbus Park, Copley Square, Boston Common, and Faneuil Hall Marketplace, among several other strategic areas of the city. These events are open to all, fostering a sense of community and warmth that encapsulates the essence of Boston’s winter celebrations.
CHRISTMAS FAIRS AND MARKETS
Find Christmas gifts for the special people in your life or for yourself in Boston’s holiday markets. Here, you’ll find various treasures from vintage curiosities to handcrafted artworks and cozy knitwear. Check out these Christmas retail hubs:
- Snowport’s Winter Holiday Market (November 10-December 31)
- SoWa’s Winter Festival, the biggest holiday market in Boston (November 24 – December 17)
- Harvard Square’s Holiday Fair (Dec 15-17 and Dec 21-23)
ENCHANTING PERFORMANCES
The Boston Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker at the Boston Opera House from November 24 to December 31 is a timeless tradition not to be missed. It weaves a spellbinding tale that resonates with audiences of all ages. Disney On Ice is also returning to Boston this year with Into the Magic at the Agganis Arena from December 21 to January 1. Once again, beloved Disney characters come to life in a captivating display of music, lights, and remarkable skating performances that everyone in the family will love.
YULETIDE CLASSICS FROM THE BOSTON POPS
The world-famous Boston Pops takes center stage anew from December 1 to 24 at the renowned Symphony Hall with its 2023 Holiday Pops series. A tradition that started exactly half a century ago, Holiday Pops continues to spread Yuletide cheer with classic carols, sing-alongs, and even a visit from Santa Claus to complete the musical extravaganza.
MENORAH LIGHTING FOR HANUKKAH
Boston is home to one of the largest and most diverse Jewish communities in the country. Living in the area for over 300 years, they now comprise around 7% of the Boston metropolitan area’s population. Having contributed immensely to the city’s growth and culture, this community has shared with the rest of Boston an important winter festivity: Hanukkah and its public menorah lightings. Boston Commons, for its part, will play host to a giant menorah lighting ceremony on November 28. Once lit, this menorah will shine bright in the park for the entire season.
A GRAND FINALE: FIRST NIGHT BOSTON
Boston welcomes the new year with First Night Boston 2024. This rousing event is filled with celebrations, live performances, parades, merrymaking across several landmarks in the city, and spectacular fireworks displays.
