This stunning and distinctive studio was designed by Sonic Space with three isolated tracking rooms, including a 350-square-foot room perfect for capturing drum sounds. Its gear list includes vintage instruments such as a 1960s Wurlitzer, a 1962 Hammond, 1972 Fender Rhodes. and a Steinway baby grand. What sets Plaid Dog apart is their innovative approach to recording costs – most projects are crowdfunded, with artists recording a demo and running a campaign to fund their sessions. Plaid Dog collaborates with artists from all over the country, covering travel costs and offering free accommodation for those living outside of the Boston area.

MAD OAK STUDIOS

A thriving hub of local and international superstars for 20 years, Mad Oak is home to some of the best gear in town. The studio was designed by Walters-Storyk Design Group and boasts an impressive acoustical setting. It is equipped with top-of-the-line Rupert Neve outboard gear, beautiful keyboards, and vintage guitar amps, all centered around a 32-channel API 1608 console. Artists can record directly onto a Studer 827 24-track tape deck or through the 32×32 Burl Mothership with Pro-Tools. Aerosmith, Joe Perry, Ben Folds, and Weird Al Yankovic are among their notable clientele, and their artist-centered concept accepts talent from all budgets and backgrounds. 

UGLY DUCK STUDIOS

Ugly Duck is a full-service audio recording and video production studio that specializes in artist development and post-production. While they can accommodate band recordings, their niche is in nurturing artists and handling post-production needs. Ugly Duck has a solid industry reputation, having worked with MTV, Walt Disney, and Lucas Arts.

BLINK MUSIC

A cozy loft-style studio with 16-foot ceilings, Blink Music is wonderfully designed as a creative setting. They specialize in acoustic recording, particularly with their Petrof grand piano and vocal records. They are well-known for film scoring and are experts in classical and film music projects, but are just as adept when working with bands. 

THE RECORD CO

For affordable recording studios in Boston, The Record Co is an excellent option. As a non-profit organization, they provide rehearsal and recording space to musicians of all backgrounds. The complex houses two recording studios, two production studios, and 15 rehearsal rooms, all offered at reasonable rates. Studio A, the largest, costs $130 for four hours, while Studio B, slightly smaller, is available for $100 per four-hour block.
