Fresh ways to incorporate art in your home

minimalist living room

Art, in itself, can be decorative. However, choosing how to display your art can also be a form of self-expression. According to American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, art means “filling a space in a beautiful way.” Having art in your home not only makes it more inviting and attractive but it also increases your home’s value. If you’re looking for unique ways to breathe art into your home, here are some ideas:

CREATE A GALLERY

If there’s a spare room in your home, what better way to use it than to turn it into a mini gallery to exhibit your art collection? Paint the walls with a neutral color such as white or black, and install soft lights to illuminate the artwork. Hang paintings on the walls and put sculptures and other three-dimensional art pieces on pedestals, similar to an art gallery. If there’s enough space, put a low bench or chair in the center where you or your guests can sit and marvel at the art. If you have more pieces than the room can hold, you can even curate the display every once in a while to create a rotating gallery.

INSTALL A MURAL

Art doesn’t always have to be in a frame or a pedestal – it can also be on your walls. If you have a large wall space, a floor-to-ceiling wall mural will add character and set the mood for the entire room. This works best in the living or dining room and is a relatively quick way to breathe life into a previously plain room. You can commission an artist to paint a mural or you could also buy printed wallpapers of artworks by Michaelangelo or Picasso. For a softer and calmer feel, you can also opt for landscape paintings of trees, rivers, or nature inspired by artists such as Hokusai or Van Gogh.

LET ART LEAD THE ROOM

Art and home decor go hand in hand. While most people pick out artwork based on the existing room decor, why not do it the other way around? Pick an art piece to display and use it as the central point for the room’s color scheme. If a painting has too many colors, pick one or two of the most striking hues and use that as a guide. Using colors is just one way to come up with an overall theme for your living space – you can also use the shapes or patterns you see in the artwork. The process of designing the room based on an artwork is a form of art in itself and becomes an excellent way to showcase your creativity. If the artwork evokes a certain emotion, you could also furnish and decorate the room in a way that reflects that said emotion.
